Here is my latest inforgraphic. This data is all about how soon worlds rarest minerals are going to run out. Data taken from informationisbeautiful.net's "take the challenge" competition. The first chart is more of a key with detailed information on each mineral. The second and third are timeline's showing how soon these mineral will run out.

City Centre Cirme

I have collected data from police.uk focusing on the amount of crime committed in city centres across England and Wales. Its no really surprise that big cities like London, Manchester and Cardiff are all in the top ten.

Comparing this data against the population of that city produces interesting results. Where the bigger cities just disappear because their population is so big. I was expecting a pattern, where the more people in the city, the more chance crime will be committed. Producing a similar visual to the one above. Instead its tipped it directly on its head.

Finally, both sets of data overlaid, to compare next to each other.

Here is a logo I've created for a local door-to-door delivery service, TDS deliveries. They needed a a logo and a little bit of branding and they settled on this design. The design tries to resemblance a 1st class stamp, as well as suggesting their service is first class.

I had this idea of making a type out of mathematical drawing equipment. It came around near the beginning of the ABCD.I.Y project, when I first drew the protractor. I've quickly mocked up it up tonight, I think I visualised it slightly different mind. Top two lines are working well, but I might develop the bottom more when I have some spare time.

Last few days I've come up with this experimental typeface called ACBD.I.Y. It pretty much does what it says on the tin (sorry for the pun) It's a typeface made up of D.I.Y bits and bobs. Aggees a go I used to post something every time I reached a milestone number of page views on my blog (e.g 1000 page loads, or 2000 page loads). However, I lost track of this so I thought I'd bring you all up to speed with a nice info-graphic to commemorate my 13,254th page load. Also I acquired CS5 over christmas and I wanted an excuse to mess about on Illustrator. The above image will enlarge when clicked, or you can just look at some close ups shown below...

I was thinking if I revise the stats in future (say a years time) it would be pretty cool, as all the graphics are proportional so it would be easy to see how the stats have changed from year to year.... hmm something to think about when I have a spare minute or two.

Two posts in two days, wow I'm on a roll. I went on holiday to Egypt aggggges ago now, but ever since I got back I been dying to illustrate Shaem el-Sheikh's airport.

I've finally found a bit of free time tonight so here you have it. As you guessed, its not the most organised airport in the world, more like every man for themselves working through a series of mazes. I thought it was quite funny and worth bringing to everyones attention.

If you been to Sharm you should know what I'm talking about ;)

Thats is really bad of me, so to make up for it here is a massive update....

1. Christmas Craft Fair - Bangor University

I heard the craft fair at Bangor was a huge success. "The best turn out we've ever had." So great news. I received an early Christmas Present from Bangor today to say thanks for the work I did for them. I've uploaded some photos of my present to say thank you to Bangor for saying thank you to me.... :S ... you get the idea!!!

2. A&M Christmas Taxi Cards

These have now been printed, all 20,000 of them, and are currently being distributed around Bradford west. So keep you eyes peeled, if your not luck enough to live in Bradford hears a snap of what they finally look like...

4. Oz Moot - T-Shirt Logos

My friend is the Scout Master of our local Troop and he's taking a few of the older scouts on Oz Moot, in Australia, over the christmas period. He asked if I could design some sort of logo for the backs of the t-shirts. These haven't been printed yet, I will try get some photos when they have been though.

5. AOI Images 35

Finally, I tweeted about this agggges ago, but I have been lucky enough to be selected for Images 35, Wooooooo! So I just wanted to let you know what mages will be getting into next years annual....

Christmas Greeting Card / Flyer for A&M taxi's

I been busy in my evenings lately working on a flyer/Christmas card for local taxi firm A&M.

The idea is that this design will be printed and distributed as a flyer, however you can fold the design in half and put on your mantel piece over Christmas. I got to illustrate the front however I wanted really which was good fun.

I worked up final image in Illustrator as it will only be A6 in size I wanted to make as clear as possible. I've included my draft in this post as I worked in my traditional method to begin with and I liked the original reindeer as you might have guessed.

I also designed the main font in Illustrator, as I thought it would be more personal rather that just plastering the design with a standard font.

I'll post some photo's after cards have been printed!

3D Glasses

You my remember this piece from a Live Guardian Brief, which I posted on my blog about a month ago...

Well it due to appear in my upcoming degree show. So for the open night as a bit of a novelty I have started making some 3x lens 3D glasses. My bedroom has turned into a small production line at the minute and I finalised the first pair the other day. Below is a pic I took of the final pair in front of all the unfinished pairs. I thought it looked like an old war General addressing his troops so I've dropped some fitting text over the top.

My final editorial illustration of my honours project. I decided to create an illustration baised on the context of my artist statement. I designed a newspaper spread to include both my statement and illustration in the same page. This can be seen below. I also used it to represent how guess that might look if it was publicised along side the other puzzles. I focused on some of the smaller details in the page including return address and I also designed the crossword and word search.... with help for a couple of websites! :D

Here are the other puzzles but little larger. I'm sure now that our deadline has passed, some of my course-mates might want a closer look to help pass the time until we have to go back to uni for the external examiner...

AOI Cycling in London 2010

Been a quite on my blog this week, thats because my class and I have been preparing for the degree show! I do have some new work to post, a couple of idea's for the AOI's Cycling in London competition. I entered all 3 images as it was free to do so. I feel my first idea is my best. Its taking the tube line colours and turned them into the spokes and rim of the wheel. Indicating the cycle superhighways are as efficient and easy to use as taking a tube/rail journey. The second is just a drawn version of the first. The thirds was plays with a very old Top Gear episode, I really liked the chap cycling made up of london transport logos on this one!

I got a couple of posts today, first off, aggges ago I posted this un-used broach. These are the follow up illustrations. I just realised I never posted the images that I eventually chose, so here they are. 1 full page, and I've mocked what the front of a map might look like if every country has been mapped and sent to print. As the image is quite retro, I wanted the cover to have the same feeling, I was playing with the idea that the cover had been designed in the 60's or 70's and it taken them so long to map the world its now looking a bit dated.

Reworked, used outlines on text instead of fill to avoid massive turquoise areas. Work up some hand drawn text as well, I think that fits better with the illustration, however I think the computer type fit with the whole page a lot better.

I have wanted to start a blog feature for a while, and I've finally got around to it. It will keep me posting and drawing regularly and hopefully generate more followers and comments on my blog. I plan on making at least one of these per week and probably post them on the weekend. It's called "Guess The..." I'll draw some clues and give you a subject, you just have to guess what I have been drawing.

I preferred the middle idea to the top, however the belief states colour illustrations, therefore a combination of ideas from top and middle helped to come up with the bottom idea. I've returned to the office for the last two days. I wasn't planning on working at all over Easter. I figured my final project is too important. However work said they were really struggling, and I thought a little break away from drawing might do me some good. So I'm working three days max. Tomorrow is my last day! Yey! I thought it would be interesting to see if I could work full time and fit one illustration in as well.... simple answer... I can't! I have tomorrow night to finish it. After a full days work it is so hard to find any free time! I haven't even been on the internet since tuesday (shock horror!!!).

Anyways, latest piece is taken from FHM, its a guide on how to get in night clubs. I wanted to work with illustrating people as I've never directly addressed it before. This article is perfect, FHM illustrations are very much what you read is what you see, so I've been drawing bouncers and people in comfy jumpers (more to be relieved soon...)! I've scanned some sketches below as I quite like my results, to say I've never drawn may people before... finished article to appear very soon (hopefully)!

Its time for another Northern Source fundraiser, this time its a Easter Stall! Seen as not many people send Easer cards I've made a few get well cards and a few greetings cards too. I've gone back to the words with two meanings idea from the start of the year. I've made 2 different versions of each card and I also made a few some ~~disasters~~ cakes too! (they taste fine, they just look a little funny).

Nous Vous came to Preston the other week. They gave a lecture and run a workshop on motivational posters. I chose an oblique strategy, "Don't Break The Silence" which sort of sums up my thoughts on motivation. I wanted to keep the design silent too, so its white paper on white paper. For the font I cut triangles out of rectangles. Then the left over triangles were used to represent something broken in the center of the page. Cheers Ali, for the photos!

Below are some badges I made for 'exbdishun'. It is basically a bring and buy exhibition, trying to raise money for our degree show. Laurence set 4 different briefs (they are titled above each picture). I tried to stick to them best I could. One other thing in the briefs, our work had to be valued at £5. So, I figured easiest way to do that would be to make 5 items each for a £1.

So I been designing this app for IKEA, if you read my last post you will know a little about it. You will also know I've had trouble with sound when exporting. I've reduced the quality massive and the audio is still one second out, I figured it's going to be the best I'm going to get. So here you are...

The main features are that you can drop items from the IKEA catalogue into the live view of your phone. This is so you can get a better idea of what your next home improvement might look like in your home. Compared with the current App some other improved features include buying/reserving products directly from your phone, locating your nearest store, reading customer reviews and the iKam Smart even picks out items that fit well with your current IKEA products. Doing all the hard work for you.

Hope you like the choice in music, I figured if developed the app would be something you 'got to get into your life.' Also if you imaging Paul McCartney lyrics are about an item of furniture its quite amusing!

Ikea iPhone App - Flow Chart

My current IKEA project unfortunately offers little I can actually post on my blog. For the last few weeks I have been designing an IKEA App for the iPhone, it's called the iKam. I have finished an animation that quickly shows its features... but I'm just have a little trouble exporting it, the images don't fit with the sound for some reason! I've spent about 3 hours on it tonight (very annoying!). So that should get posted in the near future (hopefully). For now though, here is a creative flow chart that explains how my Ikea App works, its pretty boring but its all I have to offer, (possible silent) video to follow!

Orgami Valentines Day Cards

Ikea Project

My latest brief is all about promoting Ikea's new 2011 catalog. Its a work in progress as I have decided to create an animation. My idea started out animating lego bricks but its developed to animating cutouts from the catalog. As I'm no professional animator I'm just testing techniques and teaching myself Flash at the moment which is interesting. Some tests come out good... some really bad. I just finished Test 9 (shown below) the first test with audio. I'm pretty proud of it so I figured now is the time to tell everyone what I been up to.

Zodiac Signs and Symbols; PR1

However the Magazine has decided to start a Horoscope column and I had the task of Illustration each zodiac symbol. Something else I have been working on over christmas was a join Zine for the zinefair coming up at the end of the month. Our group Pressed-On decided to work together to produce a small black and white book around the theme, how each of us interpret the sentence "I have pressed on." Christmas Break

So it's new year now (Happy new year everyone!!!) and it could not have come quicker! Christmas holidays for me has been work, work, work... and not much in the illustration department either, as you probably gathered from my lack of blog posts. I been working for eagaheat again and due to the bad weather we have been extra busy! I pretty much just took abuse all day from tenants with no heating or hot water, I glad its over I feel sorry for anyone who works there full time, it's crazy this time of the year! Anyway one of my colleges, Jess, had bought a book for, Rob, her secret-santa and asked me to design a personal bookmark to make it a extra special present. So I scanned in an old book and cut out letter's to make the words "Rob's bookmark." I was promised a free lunch but due to the snow, the van didn't even make it to our office the next day. :'-(

As well as 3 posters, I also submitted a personal statement for the Christmas exhibition. This basically explained to anyone passing, what my works about and talked you threw my book, Christmas card and poster projects, which share the same theme of 'words with two meanings.'

I figured seen as I have outlined objects to do with drink in my posters, I might as well outline my statement in the shape of a pint glass. I thought it was a nice bit of typography and deserved a post on my blog.

So it's the end of term and class and I have been working towards a small Christmas exhibition. We are all including work that we have produced so far this term. I wanted to summerise the ideas I have developed in my books and cards, into 3 posters. Each poster will still be looking at 'words with two meanings,' however I will be illustrating the themes for 'celebrating' and 'drinking' because everyone is celebrating and getting hammered at this time of the year.

As the posters are A1, I figured you would not beable to make out the individual drawings, so I have included 3 close-ups below.

Christmas Craft Stall

The craft stall started today to raise money for our degree show, we raised over £90 in one day which was very good news!!! Thanks to anyone who bought anything. If you forgot to stop by, don't worry, it's on tomorrow as well. So if your in Preston make sure you stop by the Student Union. PR1 - Issue 51; The Black and White Issue, Cover and Spot Illustration

This is my latest work for PR1, analog TV is getting switched off soon in Lancashire, so this issue has gone back to black and white, to give PR1 a different angle on the story. Below is the front cover, I also did a spot illustration.

Here is my spot illustration representing how the big flat screen TV's have left old TV sets biting their dust. The image was spit over two pages in the final layouts, I presume this was so people can make out the old TV set as it is a little dark back there. Below its how it was originally proposed and the final spread is just below that.

Third Christmas Card Idea

My third idea is "Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell, Rock." For this card, each bell and rock are raised off the page, and each piece of holly is cut out individually, just so each card isn't exactly the same.

Second Christmas Card Idea

My second idea, "Rain, Dear." Hand made like the first, the cloud is raised off the page (like all the elements of "two front teeth" and each raindrop is just glued onto the card individually. This means every time I remake this card the reindeer look slightly different, but I think thats fine, each card has its own characteristics now.

Here is the first design for a series of christmas cards. I'm continuing to work with the theme I covered in my recent Book project, words with two meanings. I been looking at lyrics to christmas songs, this card works with the idea of santa wanting his two front teeth of his comb back so he can brush his beard.

Third and final book is now finished, I have started the tedious production process; making 30 of each book. They are all ready for sale now, at £2.50 each. If anyones around in Preston this Thursday or Friday (26th & 27th November 09) there will be a craft stall in the SU selling all my books books and some christmas cards I have been working on. PR1 Issue 49; cover, headers and footers

Below is some more work I have done for PR1. Its the Halloween issue so everything is spooooky!!! I got a special mention at the start for the illustrations I did, so thanks very much Nat! :D
The cover idea was biased around movie heros/villains. It can be flipped around so one way it shows good guys at the top and the other way it shows bad guys.

The next two images are some page footers I designed with classic Halloween characters on them, they were dotted around the bottom of the pages. I made 5 in total so it wasn't just one footer used over and over again. Also this way I could spread the characters out and give them their own space.

Next are some bats i drew that were dotted all around the magazine. They were originally going to be used to frame the headers but these bats got everywhere! I also illustrated a few titles to make them look a little more interesting, I added an example right at the bottom!

Below is a logo I created for a student film co-operative on campus at The University of Manitoba. They found me through a google search for 'get well cards' which is pretty cool. And even cooler, they are located in the center of Canada, which means I got to work internationally which was a good experience and the work kept me busy at the end of the summer holidays!

Bee - Book 1 of 3

My latest project is playing around with words, I'm going to make 3 zines (artist books). My first book is about a bee. I have been looking at homonyms (words with more than one meaning but spelt differently), heteronym's (words with more than one meaning but spelt the same) and using the sound of letters to make sentences. It needs a bit of re-designing on some pages, but I'm working on book no.2 at the mo, when they are all finished I'll go back and adjust where necessary.

I recently joined up to a web site called letterPlayground. As I love type, I love this sight. I can just put up successful or unsuccessful letters and store them all in one place. PR1 Issue 48; Cover & Spot Illustrations

Last week I did a bit of work for our student uni magazine, PR1, which comes free with the student newspaper. I was asked to illustrate for the front cover (shown below), on the subject of how all the teams, clubs and societies are united at UCLan. In order to represent this my first thought was of a cluttered student's bedroom with lots of different items representing each club. As there wasn't much time I just ran with the idea developing it over the weekend, some of the clubs featured include mountaineering, Christianity, Islam, law, paramedics, circus skills, film, horse riding, swimming... and so on, i think there are 22 in total, see if you can spot them all. The books on the top left hand side are film, law and drama however they are not very clear.

At the same time I did a couple of illustrations for a piece on Guitar Hero's/Rockband etc and how they can help people socialise at party's. My first idea was of an old acoustic guitar looking sorry for its self whilst the guitar hero guitar is getting all the action. I ending up splitting the idea into two, I submitted both and they both made it to print so I was very pleased!

I sent off for some business cards few days a go from Moo and they arrived today! They are really well printed are good value so I would definitely recommend them! I have been researching business cards for a while, seen as I don't really have a style as such yet, and the fact I have produced a wide-ranging of work that I am proude meant I didn't want the classic, one image one side/contact details on the other, type of design. I decided instead to create a simple, yet effective bit of type that summed up what I'm about and clearly gave my web site so people can see the full range of work I produced rather than base a first impression on the one single image. I decided to loosely base the type on a 'wild west' theme and have the back of the card reverse printed and faded so at a glace it looks like your looking straight threw the card. Below are my designs, above is a picture of my stack of cards!

King of the Rodeo

I crashed my car into a wall on the way to work the other week, I was fine but the car had to be scrapped. I was a bit mad at myself as I wanted to keep the car for few more years, it was a good little runabout. I figured I might as turn my accident into inspiration! Let my illustration be a warning to all.... never build a wall in the middle of a road!
